VILLA SVAN

Arts and Sciences Residence

Villa Svan – Arts and Sciences Residence in Grand-Popo, Benin

Villa Svan is a small, private and homely arts and sciences residence in Grand-Popo, Benin. The residence is located on a quiet lane by the Atlantic Ocean, in the heart of the village of Grand-Popo, approximately one kilometer from the Villa Karo Cultural Center.

Benin

The influence of the French colonial era is clearly visible in Benin. Restaurants serve wine and cheese, and the country is democratic, peaceful, and relatively safe. Benin has not yet undergone extensive commercial development, and an authentic atmosphere can still be felt everywhere.

Voodoo, as practiced in Benin, is not tied to a single religion. It is widely practiced as part of everyday life among both Christians and Muslims. For visitors, it is not something threatening, but rather a fascinating and deeply rooted part of Beninese culture.

Grand-Popo

Grand-Popo is a peaceful, highly authentic small coastal town located about a two-hour drive from Cotonou. One of the town’s distinctive features is the Finnish cultural institute, Villa Karo. Thanks to its long-standing presence, local people are accustomed to foreign artists and researchers, making it a welcoming and safe place for international residents.

The Villa Karo area includes a small library and museum, as well as regular outdoor film screenings. The surrounding area is characterized by fishermen working along the beach and by the colorful presence of Benin’s voodoo culture in everyday life.

In the nearby protected natural area Bouche de Roi, the freshwater river Mono meets the Atlantic Ocean, creating a beautiful estuarine landscape surrounded by mangrove forests. In Gran Popo, every morning, you wake to a concert of birds; in the evening, you can watch the African starry sky stretching over the ocean.

The Facilities

The spacious studio extends to a covered terrace overlooking the courtyard and its beautiful garden. The studio has large tables for working. In the courtyard, there are also special facilities for dyeing textiles. Local assistants are available upon request.

On the ground floor there are two twin bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, as well as a kitchen and dining area. Mama Fumi prepares meals in the kitchen, but it is also available for residents to use.

A gate from the courtyard leads directly onto the beach.

The Residence and its Atmosphere

Villa Svan is particularly well suited to independent work, as there is no formal artistic supervision or on-site program. The residence is primarily intended for artistic and scientific work, but family members and independent travelers are also warmly welcome. An additional fee is charged for meals and cleaning for guests.

For security reasons, visitors may not be invited onto the gated residence grounds without prior agreement.

A minimum stay of two weeks, up to three months.

Mama Fumi manages the residence’s cleanliness and security and helps ensure everyday life runs smoothly. Residents can speak with her in English or French about any questions or concerns.

Residents must have comprehensive personal travel insurance. Grand-Popo has a hospital, and Mama Fumi can also quickly help arrange access to healthcare services in larger cities if necessary.

Mama Fumi

Originally from Nigeria, Mama Fumi has lived in the Grand-Popo area for more than thirty years. She speaks fluent French and English, as well as six or seven local languages.

She knows “everyone” in the local community, and everyone knows her. Mama Fumi has a moped, which she uses to run household errands. By separate arrangement and for an additional fee, she can also handle practical errands for residents.

Despite the challenges of obtaining supplies locally, Mama Fumi knows where to find fresh fish and seafood directly from local fishermen, as well as fresh bread for the breakfast table from a local home bakery.

On Saturdays, residents may sometimes join her on a trip to the local Saturday market, where they can buy fresh fruit and vegetables directly from farmers.

Mama Fumi’s warm, cheerful, and strong character helps create a safe, welcoming, and pleasant working environment for everyone staying at Villa Svan.
